Malaysia: 80 detainees in 4 years die while under custody.

As I was reading the news, I almost had the shock of my life. What!? Almost 80 detainees suffered the fate of death while under police’s custody? It was reported between Year 2000 and Year 2004, and that’s a very short span of merely 4 years. That’s also an average of 20 deaths each year while in custody.

For a while, I would have assumed torture into confession would have been a thing of the past. At least, we remember about such tactics all the way back in WW2 and not any much in modern days. What the hell is going on these days?

The Singapore Police Force has often been criticized for being inefficient. I wondered how the critics will take it, if such a statistic surface in Singapore with an estimated 12,000 police officers. Yes, be thankful… among all the petty criticism, we have yet to see the real rogue police officers. It’s of little wonder why Singaporeans are often referred to as “the frog in the well”.

Back to the main topic, it’s really hard to imagine 80 families have to go through mourning during that 4 years. No doubt they are in custody, they ain’t exactly sentenced officially. Needless to say, it wouldn’t be an coincidence that every one of those 80 deceased are heading for the death penalties. Somehow, I felt as though the detainees have been sentenced to death without trials. How can this be happening when Malaysia is fighting to join the ranks of Singapore of being a “democratic” country?

It reminded me of the audacious suspected murder of Mongolian model, Altantuya Shaariibuu. Is that what our neighbouring country is made up of?

It’s not exactly that I am against Malaysia, but I feel Malaysia need to do some serious work on cleaning up their police ranks. It doesn’t matter if the police is slow, but to have detainees dying in custody is no small matter. Even my Malaysian relatives are often complaining about how laidback their police is.

Now, I’m wondering… is Malaysia’s police deterring crime or adding to crime?
