Smoking cause cancer? Think again.
Written by ED on April 3, 2008 – 8:31 pm - Posted in World |More and more researches are revealing that the habit of smoking itself, may not necessary lead to the development of cancer. From the latest 3 independent studies, scientists remain divided on a firm conclusion that smoking causes cancer. More factually, it’s the genes in our bodies that determine this.
Maybe some would feel that I am defending my own smoking habit with such examples, but smoking with an informed mind is far better than not smoking based on twisted facts hidden behind political agendas.
While they all finger the same culprit, however, the studies disagree on whether the genetic glitch — shared by 50 percent of the population — increases the risk of cancer by itself, or only in people who smoke.
I once wrote before, that even if you’re not a smoker, you stand equal chances of contracting cancer. (Read here and here) There bound to be individuals who will never accept the scientific results despite the cries of facts… facts… facts. There are thousands and one living individuals with more than 1/4 of their lives smoking their life away, but they still end up in their casket due to non-smoking related ailments.
Of course, it’s up to the individual to decide if they should come to terms with scientific facts. Or maybe I should say, most people are not even aware that they have unknowingly become a free tool for politicians to justify governmental policies.
Just think, if smoking is indeed not the cause of cancer… does the smoking ban and such automatically means the Rights of smokers have been denied? That’s as good as saying, people who frequently take transports that emit more toxic fumes than a stick of cig are as good as murderers authorized by the government. So who’s killing who afterall?
Tell me about it… discrimination against smokers. And that’s if the alienation of smokers are not bad enough. I propose, criminalization of smokers instead. Why waste time Section 377A since smokers are such easy targets? Don’t we always victimize smokers?
Like it or not, cancer cells could be growing in you. You can’t change the facts even if you hate me for being a smoker.

Given the nature of such research I would be very, very hesitant to accept such studies at face value - especially in such an incipient field as genome research. The last comment in that article that you linked nailed it spot on - “They signal the need for greater methodological rigour” - If these studies are found repeatable on large-scale studies on people not from European descent, for instance - then perhaps we can start challenging the current theory that smoking = cancer. Until then, I’d rather stick to the established scientific theory that increased smoking leads to increased cancer occurrence.
