The Facade of Web 2.0 - Part 4.2 (Business Applications)

Written by ED on October 15, 2007 – 4:18 pm -

Previously, I was writing on the differences of public opinion when Web 2.0 is encouraged to be applied in the business environment. Hence, I shall conclude this series with this post. It is evident by now, business owners care little about how fantastic Web 2.0 sounds. We do not want something that looks pretty and cost a hefty sum to implement, but yet serve little purposes like a white elephant.

One of the surveys among the Fortune 500 companies clearly said that when only 20% of those companies whom implemented an average of six Web 2.0 applications, used three or less actively.

It’s about time, to bring the feets of Web 2.0 back down on earth.

The Facade of Web 2.0 - Part 4.1 (Business Applications)

Written by ED on October 11, 2007 – 1:08 pm -

So much has been discussed, and the generous sharing from several commentators have indeed added value to my series of posts surrounding Web 2.0. In a way, I’m really torn between writing this series here in my personal blog or my business blog.

To fully understand and define Web 2.0 is really not easy. Despite all the time I have spent on researching online, there still isn’t any firm definition of what Web 2.0 should be about. As more and more unofficial research of my own is conducted, more and more new terms came into the picture. “Enterprise 2.0”, “Business 2.0”, “Second Life” and a couple more. All of which, are pointing pretty much to the same thing.

I have since written on Web 2.0 in general, the scene and a little on social media. While the bulk of Web 2.0 applications are highly visible in several social networking sites, it really gives me the kick when I began looking into the business arena. Business management is still my favorite topic afterall.

So, is the Web 2.0 hype viable for the business environment?

The Facade of Web 2.0 - Part 3 (Social Media)

Written by ED on October 8, 2007 – 5:50 pm -

Social Media, or sometimes known as “the new media”, has become such a publicity tool because it harnesses on the backbone of the “old media”. By which, I am referring to the primitive communication mediums. The main difference between the “old” and the “new”, is the level of participation from the readers. Gone are the days, where the receiving party can only soaked among the words and can do little about what is published. Instead, we are looking at the Web 2.0 platform which enables the receiving party to contribute and add information.

Is that what the social media is only capable of doing?

The Facade of Web 2.0 - Part 2 (The Scene)

Written by ED on October 7, 2007 – 2:26 pm -

If PopOut was a good indication of the engaging the Web 2.0 fanatics in Singapore, many business owners and top executives must have been the biggest fools not to attend such a function. However, why are they not?

As I read in PopOut’s website where Web 2.0 is said to be aiming to be the most sought after platform in Singapore, my question is – how, what and why?

The Facade of Web 2.0 - Part 1

Written by ED on October 6, 2007 – 7:22 pm -

When Tim O’Reilly said, “Web 2.0 is the business revolution in the computer industry caused by the move to the internet as platform, and an attempt to understand the rules for success on that new platform.” What did he mean specifically? And what foresights did he perceived for the future of internet?

Ever since the term Web 2.0 has been termed as the second generation of internet usage and interactive, the world seems to have been taken by storm. Software developers began working differently and internet users also began using the internet in a way never seen before. Through this boom of the Web 2.0, we have seen countless social communities and utilities being unleashed across the entire World Wide Web. It seemed as though the various functions of the world have suddenly become primitive overnight.

Singapore is no different when it comes to chasing technologies. While the general web-based industries are still lapsing behind other countries in many aspects, the drive to influence the local communities into embracing Web 2.0 appears a little frivolous at this point. Once in a while, exchanges with my associates and online acquaintances threw up more doubts about the Web 2.0 phenomenon than actually being convinced of why we should start implementing it in our lives.

Is Web 2.0 just another fashion statement?
