Singaporeans really kiasu?
Written by ED on December 10, 2007 – 2:40 pm - Posted in Singapore, Society |Sales events like Metro sales and John Little sales are no longer new to Singaporeans. Each year, several venues play host to many of such sales. Did you go?
First, I went for the food festival a couple weeks back and yesterday, I was just hanging around Singapore Expo. While having my coffee at the food court, I began to realize carloads of people who drove in early. No, they weren’t heading for the Sunday services for City Harvest or FCBC. Rather, they thronged in early to have breakfast at the food court.
I found it amusing that someone would travel all the way to Singapore Expo for breakfast since there’s nothing much in the food court anyway. But what’s even more amusing is, watching Singaporeans come to Singapore Expo as early as 7am waiting for the doors of John Little sales to open at 11am.
Singapore - being a FINE country - has plenty of sales throughout the year. It may not be an extravaganza like the Metro sales or John Little sales but take a walk through the shopping malls, sales are going on for almost 365 days a year. Are we any lacking in terms of sales? Definitely not. There will always be a sales event somewhere to milk us of our hard-earned money.
Coming back to John Little sales, I found it absolutely amusing to see people coming so so so soooooo early to wait. As I walked through the entire ground and out of the closed entry, I actually found people coming with floor mats sitting just right beside the entry point. I am not sure, but I seriously don’t hope that they have been sleeping there overnight. The only logical explanation I can find is that John Little sales is coming to an end, hence the last chance to grab any good stuffs that remains after a long sales event. (I guess the good stuffs been grabbed since the first day LOL!)
Moreover, walk into any John Little outlets and you will forever be seeing sales and discounts for random items throughout the year. I really don’t understand whether there’s such a need to make a grand appearance at 7am for a sales.
In some ways, I can understand though. Cost of living is getting high in Singapore and every household will be looking into ways of reducing their expenditures. Sales like these are a good way to get stuffs at a much lower price than usual. But at 7am!? LOL!
My mum always became one of them, until I retort her early in the morning. Is the world coming to an end and you’re afraid of losing the chance to shop ever again?

I hate waiting. It sucks to squeeze with the crowd too. Went for that electronics fair last few weeks and nearly died of suffocation. I don’t like these kind of Metro or John Little sales as well. Snatch with those aunties confirm lose
