FIRE FIRE FIRE… AGAIN AGAIN AGAIN!!!

Written by ED on November 16, 2008 – 4:41 am - Posted in Singapore |

I was puzzled when the lights and PC suddenly went out between 1am to 1.15am. Within seconds, I picked up the familiar smell of burning stuffs. For a while, I wondered who the hell was burning incense or joss-papers in the middle of the night. Of all places, it gotta be right outside my window.

The silent night was interrupted by a loud “POP”. Hang on, something’s amiss. This can’t be right, but is my house on fire? I dashed out of my room to check around, nothing’s going on but the smell was lingering in the air. Almost immediately, I heard screaming voices from the next block… FIRE FIRE FIRE! I figured they meant a fire in their block, but I took my keys and walked out to the corridor. I scanned the next block and found it rather weird that they were looking in my direction rather than the fire in their block.

SHOCK! It’s not their block… it’s… MY BLOCK!!!!!!!!!!!!

The left picture was taken shortly after the fire engine arrived. The right picture were the residents of the next block who were kind enough to raise the first alarm by screaming across to us. Some of them ran all the way from the 4th floor of their block, to ours with pails of water. As the spot was hidden behind the construction barrier, the neighboring residents were all we could count on to direct the firefighters to us. The fire engine almost drove away in another direction.

So to the neighboring residents… THANK YOU GUYS!

Sorry for the blurry pictures once again. I know I need a better camera phone, any sponsors since I have so much first-hand news to share in my blog? Isn’t my blog hot? I know I am a hot blogger, so many fires to report here!

Apparently, the rubbish bin and furniture dumped there had caught fire. As a result, it also burned through all the wiring from the main power room on the first level, which explained the sudden blackout. As the fire was put out by my neighbor, it became apparent that this was the work of a arsonist who enjoys the thrill of lighting things up. Let’s have a recap.

  • 14th June 2007 - (Blk 34X) Fire broke out from a parked motorcycle on the void deck of the block behind mine.
  • 17th June 2007 - (Blk 34X) Three days later, a similar incident took place barely three blocks away.
  • 16th Nov 2008 - (Blk 34X) Today, the rubbish bin and abandoned furniture were mysteriously set ablaze.

If these were the works of a single arsonist (or a group), obviously he (or they) hadn’t been caught. At least, that’s my guess. Funnily, my instincts are telling me that the arsonist/s decided to lay low for a while and for some reasons only known to him or them, decided to resurface. What exactly does he wants? Enjoying the thrill of watching people in fright? Is he angry with civil servants and decided to do something like this, so he can watch firefighters & police officers rushing to the scene and getting busy? Or does he hate other mankind in the first place?

That’s only my guess, don’t take my words for it.

At the same time, this fire exposed a very serious flaw in HDB flats. I really meant…  A VERY VERY VERY SERIOUS FLAW!!! I will touch on this in my next post. For now, be thankful Mr Endoh didn’t die in the fire due to the HDB flaw.

Or either way, you can curse why didn’t Mr Endoh die? The arsonist should have done better.

    *wipe sweat off forehead*

I think the wiring wasn’t done up properly. Power tripped twice in a week.
