What are we praying for?
Written by ED on June 20, 2008 – 1:40 pm - Posted in Christianity, Life |Qwerty’s comment in where I discussed about proving Christianity with Science, aroused my attention to another issue which I long wanted to talk about. This is not to rebutt him, but I have to thank him for reminding me of something I have forgotten. It was sparked off when he asked if prayers could heal an amputee.
Prayers are not uncommon to Christians, and do not be surprised that even the most agnostic person can unknowingly utter a word of prayer. To whom, you may ask? I don’t know seriously. I draw your attention back to the specific act of prayers though.
Whenever I am faced with a difficult situation, my elders and Spiritual Father never fail to tell me to pray for it. I tell the same thing to my friends too. Pray for it, and it will be granted. People seemed to get the wrong idea whenever I advised them to pray for their desires, the wants will be met instantaneously. I think it’s important to understand there is no certain timeline in the spiritual realm. So, if our wants and needs are not met, aren’t prayers useless? That’s where many people have gone wrong when asking for favours.
Blame it on human’s greed or our desire of instant gratification.
Imagine if you’re hunting for a job, and you send out waves after waves of prayers. Will a job land at your feet out of nothing? Certainly not. First, you need to scout for job openings. Then, you need to submit your resumes and attend interviews.
How about those who are in need of money? It’s only logical you have to work. And even if you are gunning for the top lottery prize, you will still have to make the effort to queue and buy a lottery ticket. It doesn’t even matter if you’re hoping to become a multi-millionaire so you can achieve financial freedom and enjoy your life.
All the above, are not going to fall from the sky. What most of us are (and should be) genuinely praying for is not the sweet returns but instead, praying for the openings for us to achieve our wants. Of course, there will always be debates on miracles. If you had prayed for gambling winnings 2 years ago, and come Monday you find yourself staring at the winning ticket, you would have said it’s a miracle too. Or perhaps, if you prayed for a continental car 5 years ago and you find yourself driving one now, you would have believed your wish had been granted.
I often tell friends that whatever not granted now, does not mean it will not be granted in future. Since some of them share the same faith as me, then it should be reasonably easy for them to trust that God is never too late, God is never too early. God’s always on time!
Rewards don’t come without your fair share of work, my friend. Prayers you may say, but when the door is opened you will still need to do your part. Therefore, that’s also another way of reaffirming that you are praying for the opportunities to materialize your dreams. It ain’t gonna fall in place out of nothing, that I’m sure.
It still amuses me until today, whenever someone goes… “God, please give me more money to get myself free.”
You reckon God gonna knock on your doors? “Cisco delivery…!!! I need you to sign this package from Singapore Mint, Sir.”

I agree with you. I always ask my christian gf why she prayed for herself and family instead of strangers.
I doubt the effectiveness but hey isn’t it the thought that counts.
I am always on the opposite end and sometimes I wonder have I been wrong? I typically enjoy praying for the well-being of friends around me, and some total strangers like when the South Korean missionaries were abducted in Afghanistan. I get loads of weird commentaries in my life, asking why am I not praying for myself?
I would love to, but perhaps there are very strong teachings in me from my elders that there are always people worse off than me. It’s something I can’t shake off.
