Muslim group urges Malaysians to boycott Chelsea football tour

The headline was rolled out yesterday as Chelsea defeated Man Utd in the EPL, and apparently Chelsea’s problem isn’t only about ground staffs vs Man Utd players. Even though Chelsea is not my cup of tea, I don’t see how a football match should be linked politically.

I thought football is a game that establish friendship even though the rivalry on the pitch can be fiery. I thought football is the game to share love even though it’s an international game. I even thought football is the game to bring joy and hope to needy countries. But apparently some people in our neighbouring country feels otherwise.

I wonder what is going on in this Mohamad Azmi’s mind, to think that political talks can be conducted on a football pitch. Is that the culture in Malaysia? I hope not. If that’s really the case, obviously Mahathir and Badawi haven’t been playing football together for a long time. Little wonder why they’re at loggerheads now. Just like how I oppose the rallies interfering the Olympic torch run by anti-Chinese in an attempt to bring political issues involving Tibet, why should anyone sacrifice sportmanship for dirty politics?

If even a mere football game can break the ice and solidify relationships between countries, why not?

I guess the issue here is about bending rules unnecesssarily. Who knows Grant may be there to spy on Malaysia?

It would be interesting to see if Israel would bend the rules to accommodation Malaysian even if has nothing to do with politics.
