Junta criticizes lack of humanitarian spirit
Written by ED on May 31, 2008 – 3:08 pm - Posted in Current Affairs, World |I think the World has been right in being pessimistic, and indeed Myanmar has turned a full 180o in criticism of aid countries barely after a week. Perhaps, it was a show specially performed for United Nations Secretary General - Mr Ban Ki-moon. They ran a similar show afterall, when “organized relief camps” were being displayed to diplomats.
We have heard it all too many times, that Myanmar is fully capable of managing the disaster. I finally understood what the Junta leaders actually meant when New Light of Myanmar (owned by Myanmar Government) said, “Myanmar people can easily get fish for dishes by just fishing in the fields and ditches. In the early monsoon, large edible frogs are abundant.”
We know it, it’s been a sham all the while while many still think diplomats are working magic on the ground. Personally, I feel diplomats are being fooled around like clowns by the Junta leaders. Yet, war is impossible because it is inhumane to attack a country when it is still trying to climb up on its feet after a major disaster. It’s a “left-cannot…right-cannot” situation.
Myanmar also criticized countries that imposed sanctions on her, citing that such countries are lacking in humanitarian spirit. According to the father-children relationship in New Light of Myanmar, it made the Junta looked like spoilt brats throwing tantrums when her parents are trying to cater the best for her. The sham polls held with disregard to national hardship, isn’t that a more severe lack of humanitarian spirit to place political power above all else?
Myanmar has been reported to be forcing victims out of relief camps, even those with homes destroyed. Is it an attempt to reduce the amount of people needing aid, while at the same time raising more money from international aid groups to feed their greed, I ain’t sure and I can’t tell. But I feel it is far more complex than wanting citizens to get back on their feet.
The calls for donation is ever-going. Millions of dollars have been collected with no substantial progress seen in Myanmar. I would urge friends around me to draw a clear line between meaningful aid assistance and blind donations. After close to a month of Cyclone Nargis’s aftermath, the Junta has shown the World what they truly wanted.
Bring forth cold hard cash, place them unto thou’s feet. Retreat with silence and back bowed, and a good ally you shalt be.
I think we should await the various agencies to resolve the issue with Myanmar before we throw in more money stupidly. Sure, some would definitely criticize my move but who can guarantee the money are in the right hands?
