Ghosts? Demons? Spirits? Hello, everyday is not Sunday!
Written by ED on November 24, 2007 – 4:45 am - Posted in Christianity, Trivial & Whining |Some time back, I mentioned a little about the exorcism I attended, and recently I have been reading a little on the law suit brought against Novena Church by Mrs Amutha Valli. Another blogger also asked for more of my stories. So as I was sitting down reading through the court case, I was inspired to write this post.
The question now, is it really so easy to encounter spirits and demons?
The answer is a very simple one, according to my own “research” and understandings. The answer is… NO! Wake up, my friend!!!
You’d see, many individuals have many misunderstandings about the spiritual world which the commoners cannot see until we are dead. Despite my own experiences, there are still signs that I cannot read and interpret. The way spiritual possession is talked about, made it sound as though we get to see spirits on a daily basis. Maybe yes, maybe no, I wouldn’t know for sure since I am not an expert in this field.
I said once, that I am able to see “things” but hey, it’s not on a daily basis. Moreover the ability has grown out of me as I grew older and with more maturity and common sense these days, there are some scientific explanations to certain things I see. And they have nothing to do with the spiritual world at all.
A friend once asked me, how did the TV stations come up with so many real life stories? My answer was; Do you know for every one story, there are probably 999,999 hallucinations? Yes, that’s the way I understand the whole issue about reports of spiritual interference in our world. The statistics of real spiritual possession is just a very very very tiny amount that cannot be explained by medical science. So if you were to ask me realistically, even if I am a firm believer in the battle between God and Satan, I would say most stories are either fake or there are some underlying psychiatric explanations.
The misunderstanding about spiritual attacks is evident when commoners cannot even differentiate the two main kinds of possession. They are (in my own simple words); physical possession and property possessions.
Physical Possession
This is the circumstance when a spirit or demon enters the body of a living soul and resides in the body. Although this is usually the case, sometimes the spirit or demon does not reside in the body of the living soul but continuously haunts a particular living soul. Under such condition, attempt to shift your geographic location will be in vain. Fact is, no matter where you go - it will follow you. This is because you are its weak target, not anything else.Property Possession
In comparison to the above, the spirit or demon is wanting to possess the house/land/area and not the living soul. The disturbances and threats are only its attempt to drive the living soul out of its territory, which it thinks belongs to it. Usually, everything stop once the living soul move out.
So who are all these “exorcists”? Many individuals believe that an exorcist must be an individual of priesthood, but that is another wrong perception. An exorcist can be anyone who is gifted with the ability to communicate with spirits and demons. It is this ability that enables an exorcist to converse, negotiate or convince a spirit/demon to cross over to the other world or surrender to the powers of God.
As I speak the words of spirits and demons, I am sure there are already people who are confused between the two entities. Spirits are the souls of people, and they are often liken to a lost child stuck in time, thinking they are still alive. Demons on the other hand, are the servants to Satan. Interestingly, Satan in the Christian arena is also known very similarly as Shaitan in the Muslim arena. So there goes the similarity.
Also, do exorcists kill demons… or Satan for that matter? Again, no! No exorcists possess the power to do so. Only God possesses that power because He is the Supreme King of all Kings. So if someone tells me he or she can destroy spirits and demons… OH, give me a break!
So should Christians believe in the supernatural? I can’t speak for most, but personally when I have chosen to believe in Him, I have already recognized that there will be some forces somewhere which will oppose Him. Perhaps, that is my way of believing in the spiritual world.
Eventually when everyone start asking is the spiritual world real, come on… bumping into a spirit or demon is probably hundred times more difficult than winning a lucky draw prize. Do you think it is really that easy? Isn’t Singapore Pools better off starting a betting option of the next location to see a spirit or demon?
But still, even if there’s one seated right beside you as you read this post now, you wouldn’t know about it. Simply because you are not gifted with the ability to see or communicate with them.
For now, get back to the real world. You’re not that “lucky” yet! And I don’t think you wanna be.

Christians believe in the spirit world, but not as how horror movies and popular media portrays it.
The Bible expressly states in Ephesians 6:12
“For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.” (ESV)
Also, God desires that we worship Him in spirit, because HE is spirit
“God is spirit, and those who worship him must worship in spirit and truth.” — John 4:24 (ESV)
Shabbat Shalom.

Sicarii: I agree with what you commented but people who do not believe in the Bible, we will have to explain without biblical reference.

Fantastic post as usual. I love your structural logic!
Although for exorcists, I wonder if they have to be able to communicate with the supernatural. I know it’s not very nice to bring thunder and lightning and kick a poor confused spirit out, but you can call upon your particular God’s powers to do so without having to speak directly to the spirit right?
After all isn’t an exorcism just an intercessing prayer on the victim’s behalf?

Fari: For a start, the prayers involved are not only for the victim, but also for the protection of surrounding people and the spirit itself.
As for speaking towards spirits, that I am not too sure. My guess is, we are often referred to not only as Sons of God but also His warriors. With His Holy Spirit in us, it is the same as God speaking and commanding the spirit directly. I have never thought of asking that question before though.
I hope you’re joking about the thunder and lightning part. Haha! The real thing is as solemn as a lawyer meeting a crime suspect. I think most people are pretty lost with this sort of stuffs because of the way the movies projected it.

But isn’t it true that demons are ever present, even though I might agree that demon possession is rare?
After all, the Prince of this Earth and its minions will be attempting to manipulate things in this world to obstruct the work of God, no?

I applaud your logical take on things, but when explaining things of a spirital nature, I’d rather go by what the Word teaches.
Shabbat Shalom.

Yeah but Endoh’s explaining it to non-Christians. What significance would the Word hold to them? It’s just another holy book.
Thunder and lightning, haha, it’s metaphorical. I think The Exorcist as good as it was pretty much screwed up the whole perception of exorcism.
Quite typically Hollywood.

XZ: Yes, they do exist be it we acknowledge it or not. As long as Satan is not subdued, there will always be demons.
Fari: I find Exorcist artistry acceptable but it stays only as that. I wonder if its possible for them to create such a exorcism movie to be comparable to Perfect Storm - which is highly commented by geologists and oceanologists for the highest accuracy matching to natural sea storms.

Well not everything is as thrilling as a song, and probably an accurately portrayed exorcism would send everyone straight to sleep.

I was replying to Endoh’s question here, and I quote:
“So should Christians believe in the supernatural? I can’t speak for most, but personally…”

Spirits are very true. If one believe in God, they must believe in spirits. Even evil ones…
I like your post. Personally, IMHO, if one does not allow any negativity, void or spaces in ourselves, the evil ones will not be able to ‘come in’ and take advantage of you.
Therefore, it is important to always think positive.
