Are we being cruel to cancer patients?
Written by ED on June 17, 2008 – 8:55 pm -So, the Singapore-led medical team has a S$3.5 million clinical trial to extend the lives of advanced-stage cancer patients by three months, or possibly more. From what was reported on news, I’m glad that selected patients will be treated free-of-charge in this trial. Any medical operation that can progress from animal-testing to human-testing is good news.
On the other hand, I can’t think of a good answer when I asked myself… what if the extension means also the extension of pain and suffering for another three months? Since I am not a medical professional, I realized the term “advanced stage” can be rather vague. There are quite a variety of symptoms which can be classified under “advanced stage”. Since that’s the case, I can only based my understanding on what was reported, that “doctors do not expect to cure them but to give them a more comfortable survival rate.”

Are environmentally friendly cars really helping?
Written by ED on June 17, 2008 – 11:34 am -
It’s a joy to see automobiles manufacturers taking the cue to re-design their cars due to global warming, with Honda announcing the continual production of fuel cell cars. Of course, there are also other options of hybrid and electric cars to contemplate with. All of them look promising in our desperate attempt to save Earth.
It’s little wonder that vehicular discharge is one of the critical contributors to the deterioration of our climate. However, I actually question how effective these moves will be. Is it really going to help our planet? Or is it just another marketing chant like how some companies use charities to market themselves?

China bank staffs bought shoes with donations
Written by ED on June 14, 2008 – 7:13 am -Didn’t I just said, be smart and not blind? Now, employees of China biggest bank were caught buying 56 pairs of Nike shoes using donated funds meant for earthquake victims after an audit. Yesterday, it was a rumour. Today, it’s a fact. Receipts were faked and apparently, a few other fund-raising accounts have been frozen too. I will leave you to read the report yourself.
We are always quick to show how generous we are in times of needs, and we blindly step into donation drives without further scrutinizing the organizations that solicits for donations. In a way, some of us are afraid of being labelled as lacking in compassion or empathy. But looking at all these corruptions, perhaps we should be happy to be “lacking” in these.

Obama officially takes the “war” to Internet
Written by ED on June 13, 2008 – 4:57 pm -It’s heartening to see a serious attempt by a politician in using the internet to fight against messages with intent of harm. We know how powerful the internet can be, both good and bad. You can share the beautiful causes of charity and actions against cruelty or environmental protection with Facebook groups. At the same time, you can disrupt someone’s life by posing up revengeful articles or hurtful purposes.
I actually visited the site, Fight the Smears, and thought it was a rather appropriate title. In truth, I didn’t quite expect any politician to officially declare “war” in the internet realm. Governments and politicians all over the world still rely on traditional media more than new media to bring across their points anyway.
