Is openness really what Singaporeans can handle?

Written by ED on May 22, 2008 – 1:12 pm -

It is not surprising why I am caught fluctuating between both ends, because I don’t believe the response from either side yields long term changes that will be beneficial to our society - particularly lesser control over internet. On one hand where we are pushing for lesser control over internet, yet we are also the ones to cry foul over the kind of spillage we have seen. Most of which, were anticipated many years ago.

Just yesterday, Paddy and I had a short conversation and I briefly sent him a remark that our blogosphere is not mature enough. I have long suspected the hypocrisy of Singapore’s blogosphere, but Fragrance Prince’s episode seemed to confirm my sentiments. Of course, a lot of comparisons were made between Fragrance Prince and our infamous Xiaxue - who was also known to have made slightly seditious remarks in her blog years back. The outcome is significantly different as we know.

Donation to Myammar? No thanks!

Written by ED on May 17, 2008 – 4:48 am -

Cyclone Nargis is the most tragic natural disaster to happen since 2004’s Indian Ocean Tsunami, apart from China’s earthquake. I am particularly drawn to Nargis’s aftermath more than China’s earthquake due to the magnitude of damages and loss of lives. China has since received both aids and manpower from several countries, but the same cannot be said for our Myammar friends.

Of course, any such incident immediately draws out the need for donations across the globe. Like Indian’s Ocean Tsunami, the world responded not only with money and material aids. Billions of dollars are also being invested by many nations to develop a better Tsunami warning system for the benefit of all. While banks, organizations and many corporate companies (quick to embark on a marketing propoganda) are actively raising funds for Myammar, I wonder how realistic the effort is.

Backstabbing & Stabbing Back

Written by ED on May 9, 2008 – 6:19 pm -

One of the very unique behaviours I had discovered as a child is, many people enjoy the act of backstabbing others. That’s during my good old days of Alamak Chat, I think the older generation would definitely laugh over all the silly quibbles. Before I even wrote my first MySpace blog post in 2005, there’s already an article floating somewhere calling it “The Art of Backstabbing”.

How have this art found a second home in our blogosphere too? Singapore’s economy has risen progressively and technologies have improved by a mile since the 1980s, this expression of hatred has endured the test of time and had become a trademark of some individuals. Just like Tupperware was the hot topic among housewives in my childhood, backstabbing has survived to plant its roots in our newer generations and beyond. Do not be confused between gossiping and backstabbing though, it’s really two different things.

Mandatory First Aid Lessons In Schools

Written by ED on April 27, 2008 – 3:00 pm -

What do you guys feel about it? Is it even a viable option and necessity in Singapore? And even if we implement such a curriculum requirement, at what stages of our schooling life should this be implemented?

As a bunch of us sat through the post-service lunch discussion, our conversation drew weird stares from neighbouring tables at Singapore Expo. If we were to do an open presentation of this idea, I think we are going to draw even more stares from the public. Maybe because we sounded too novel…

Singapore doesn’t need the red pill… they need Red Alert!

Written by ED on April 26, 2008 – 5:02 am -

It’s another sleepless night after doing up the charts so I decided to spend time reading up on bloggers feedback of Mas Selamat’s escape again. One post from Ian’s stood out from many others, because the rest hardly inspire or explore any deeper assessment of the escape. And Ian compiled a couple other blogs, of which I would briefly mentioned one by one.

For a start, why do I focus on the Gurkha Contingent and not ISD? The reason is simple, my heart goes out to the two Gurkha guards who were thrown into the limelight for the mistake they have committed. Particularly so, for that one single Gurkha guard who was ear-marked for his time-delay.

University teach some everything… but just not using brains.

Written by ED on April 20, 2008 – 8:14 am -

My niece came back from school on Friday with tears and sulking for the rest of the day. After a little pressure, she began to told me how her teacher labelled her as “lazy”. I asked if it was anything to do with late homeworks, she said no. Apparently, what triggered the teacher off was her ink-printed name on her assignments.

Basically, I bought her a self-inking printing kit and taught her how to use it much earlier, when school started for a short while. She brought back all her books, because her teacher has requested for all pages to be identified by their names and class. There were 5 books, each with more than 100 pages. Gosh, I can’t even imagine myself writing my name on more than 100 pages as an adult, what about a kid? So I bought the printing kit from Popular bookstore, on my way back from my Sunday service one day.
