Singapore Government needs better HR management

Written by ED on June 10, 2008 – 5:48 am -

Hey, I don’t put up such a bold title if I haven’t had concrete evidence alright? I was just having coffee when one of the news report in Channel NewsAsia almost choked me to death. After catching my breath, I am now laughing as I typed this post. If you’re curious, it’s here that reported about the Government keeping the 3/4 tank rule for Singapore vehicles travelling up north.

No, I have no problem with that. Maybe I should say, I have grown used to it. Removing the 3/4 tank rule or not doesn’t really makes a lot of difference in Singapore. When funds are lost through one avenue, there’s always something else to bank on to recuperate those revenues.

Do you remember Pulau Merlimau?

Written by ED on June 9, 2008 – 7:36 am -

Until today, the Singapore Refinery Company fire on Pulau Merlimau in 1988 is Singapore’s longest fire ever documented. It lasted for a whopping 4 days and chilled many spines of Singaporeans. It seemed weird to be talking about this fire, I know. It was the fire that destroyed a Woodlands factory a few days ago which aroused memories of Pulau Merlimau fire.

Pulau Merlimau is now a part of Jurong Islands. For those in the later generations, some probably didn’t even know Singapore had such a big fire to battle. I am sure however, the older generations will remember the incident pretty clearly, especially after the collapse of Hotel New World in 1986.

Will the real psychopath please stand up?

Written by ED on June 8, 2008 – 6:46 am -

It was like a Mediacorp prime-time drama when Chee Soon Juan was recently hurled with the insult of “near psychopath” by a much respected political figure, Lee Kuan Yew. Sure, it raised the eyebrows of some while others found it hilarious for such insults to be permissible in the Court of Law. Of course, it was a very glaring evidence who the laws applied to, and who are exempted. I’m not about to start a discussion on our judiciary though, since Law Minister K Shanmugam said it is the duty of citizens to “condemn attacks on the country’s judiciary.”

I began to ponder about the term “psychopath” when I watched Most Evil on Discovery Channel. What exactly makes Mr Chee near-psychopathic? Maybe Mr Chee is already psychopathic? Or perhaps, the psychopathic one isn’t Mr Chee at all?

Can Malaysia walk the talk?

Written by ED on June 5, 2008 – 7:30 am -

If there’s anybody who can make a mockery out of Malaysia it can only be her ministers, following reports that Malaysia will continue to push for her claim on Pedra Branca. It just showed precisely why Singapore has always been wary of our “good neighbour”. Some of us saw it coming, did you?

If bilateral ties ain’t messy enough, this will certainly turn some stomachs even across the causeway from Singapore. It really leads one to wonder if Malaysian officials are respectable enough to stand by their words, especially when both countries had pledged to accept ICJ’s judgement as final.
