Saturday (Home Alone) Lunch

Written by ED on December 1, 2007 – 1:53 pm -

Haha, I told you I love it when my family is not at home and I can have the whole kitchen to myself right? It’s another beautiful Saturday again, and the silence in the whole house is so sweet. Best of all, I cook my own lunch again. Nothing beats cooking my own lunch. What did I have? Ahemmm…

Reflections over home cooked food

Written by ED on August 10, 2007 – 9:30 pm -

My family is overseas for tour… and I love it. First, it’s the peace that I get. I have the entire place to myself and I play my music pretty loud without people banging my room’s door. Not that it is that loud, they just have something against the kind of music I listen to. Play anything to their liking, nothing’s too loud even when I am sleeping. Now you know the other reason why I am in desperate need to move out… when this affects my doing of music. It became a neccessity instead of want.

The other thing I like, is the complete freedom to cook my own food. Most housewives like my mum cooks the meals, so half the time even if they have a bad hair day and something weird ends up on the dining table - nothing much we can complain about. When it finally comes to a situation like now, many pampered people would pray for their quick return but not me. I wish they can stay overseas longer so I can do my own cooking.I had Japanese food and two Mcdonald’s meals over yesterday, I reckon today would be a good day to detox myself with some decent home cooked dinner. Yep, I skipped lunch with three cups of coffee and a cookie. I began to crave for Chicken Cabbage Soup again so very quickly I bought all the ingredients from NTUC. For tonight, I’m having…

Chicken Cabbage Soup

Tofu - Minced Pork

Oyster Sauce Baby Kailan

As I learnt cooking several years back after renting my own apartment out there, I began to understand what it seriously meant “children (no matter how old) are forever little kids in the parents’ eyes”. As I was browsing through NTUC, there was this lady who was trying to choose some fresh vegetables when her mum interrupted her. She told her mum she knew what she wanna buy and her mum just went yakkaty yakkaty yakkaty. Amusing scene to me, because I have such parents. Mum does most of the cooking, but apparently she thinks that I can’t even survive with a woman who can’t cook a decent meal. On the contrary, my elder sister can’t even cook a pot of rice without accidents. She doesn’t know how much water to put in. Beat that! And I thought preparing rice is one of the easiest, apart from instant noodles.

Sometimes I wish I could just tell her; Mum, I’m all grown up… I have lived by myself for two freaking years which you don’t know where… I have been sailing out in South China Sea for more than three years and prepared meals for my entire ship crew with half-past-six cooking skills. The only thing they can do is fried fried fried. That’s the easiest for them, until I joined their ship and shook my head at their cooking. One of the senior man in the ship and I - being the better cooks - volunteered to prepare meals for the entire ship instead of wasting precious ingredients at their hands. Sure, it cuts into our resting time… but at least I know I am eating better food and I go to rest a happier man.

Mum, why do you think I was snooping around the kitchen as a primary school child whenever you cook? I was stealing knowledge! Hahaha!

I think my elder sister has more to worry about not being able to get married than I do. With or without a woman, it doesn’t really makes alot of difference. Not like I can’t cook for myself?

Some may ask, what’s the big deal about home cooked food? The big deal is, throw the majority of Singaporeans in a war-zone, they are probably going to die of hunger instead of getting shot by bullets. McDelivery in Afghanistan? You’d wish! So why shouldn’t some of us be proud that we can fill our own tummy without relying on others? What’s even more humorous is whenever I hear “Singaporeans love food…” I tend to finish off the sentence in my heart with “… but they can’t cook!” Of course, a small handful of friends around me know how, and sometimes we cook and bring over to each other’s place for a mini-gathering.

I enjoyed my dinner thoroughly… what did you have?

Before

After

BURPPPPzzzzzzz!!!

Catching up on a public holiday

Written by ED on August 10, 2007 – 3:27 am -

Even though I am not a keen follower of the National Day Parade, I must admit that this public holiday is darn good for catching up with friends. One funny thing is, alot of people assumed I have no social life just because I hardly write any posts about my outings. Well, let’s just say such outings are trivials which are oh-so-common. Who cares who I meet and hang out with anyway?

This afternoon, I met up with Sis Ling and was introduced to her friend Esther. Gosh, I haven’t stepped into a KTV for a really long time. Ling was pushing me to wear a red shirt… but but but… I really don’t have a red shirt. I think there was some sort of promotion going on at KBox for customers wearing red. I ended up having two mugs of beer there, thankfully not potent enough to make me walk sideways. Friends who know me, I’m always a whisky person.

We finally called it a day at KBox and had our dinner at Ichiban Sushi, Parkway Parade. See what I mean by having more friends who stay in the East? Anyway, the food was so-so. Not that we are fussy eaters, but I think three of us were so engrossed in our conversation that everything just went down our throat. Ling ordered a Yuba Maki Age, Esther ordered a Salmon Kabuto Teriyaki and for myself, Gyu Teri Don. I asked if anyone was game enough for sashimi, wow… we chose Spicy Salmon Carpaccio. It’s not really spicy as stated though… but whatever. As long as it’s sashimi, can’t ask for anything better.

So it was indeed a great meetup. We were there enjoying our food, talking about work, life, people etc… it sure beats having to scream myself silly in a club just to pass a simple message across.

I desperately need to move to the East. ROFL!

A quick snap… Esther & Ed

Something is very wrong with Ling’s flag… can you spot it? ROFLMAO!

McDelivery… one that is worth commendation

Written by ED on August 9, 2007 – 7:30 am -

We hear alot of complaints about lousy customer service in Singapore, but this is definitely one that is worth some commendation.I called the McDelivery hotline at about 5.55am and placed my order for my beloved big breakfast. After all the yadaa-yadaa, I was informed the waiting time would be around 45mins. Well, hardly! I heard the doorbell went off at about 6.15am and standing at my doorsteps was the delivery rider for my food. He greeted me “Good Morning” brightly and had my food already in his hands. I am sure some of you had experienced a delivery rider knocking on your door, and yet you still have to wait for him to slowly retrieve your order for you. Not quite for me. The very moment I opened my door, he had the paperbag right infront of me.

I took over the food, and paid. As he turned around to get my change, I observed that he was pretty drenched. It’s weird, because having a raincoat with him doesn’t quite amount to that. Out of curiosity, I asked why was he so drenched. He replied, that the zip on the bag somehow malfunctioned and so he used his jacket to cover the bag in case the food are soaked. Somehow, it was my instinct that I told him… it’s ok, keep the change. The change was slightly below $3.00 anyway. It’s not alot, but I am sure that amount is somewhat sufficient for a decent breakfast like a packet of nasi lemak or prata. A hot coffee on a cold morning for himself perhaps?

The first thing was, my food was delivered to me in the rain - piping hot. How can I not be thankful? He was polite and courteous. In fact, I haven’t heard such a refreshing greeting in the morning for ages. Most of which, gave me a weary “Good… Morn…ing… Sir…”

What really impressed me, was that he actually got himself drenched trying to shield the food. Maybe some peeps will go exclaiming, that is their job anyway, what’s the big deal? But look, he’s trying to do his job in the best way he can to make sure my food comes intact, even at the expense of getting drenched and who knows, he might just fall ill? I know we have alot of complaints how dangerously they rode their bikes, but to deliver my food fast and piping hot is certainly impressive. It’s only a normal delivery that probably half the population of Singapore had experienced. What sets him apart though, is that extra “personal touch” in his delivery.

I hope he’s already under good shelter because the rain suddenly turned extremely heavy after he left. (Shelly said I sounded as though I am in love with him. LOL!)

I can’t help it. After finishing my breakfast and being a satisfied customer, I got down immediately to send an email citing the branch and transaction ID to offer further commendation. It slipped my mind at that point to get his name, so hopefully they can track the correct rider and inform him about my appreciation. How can we ignore good service when they come knocking on our doors, but yet end up complaining about lousy service?

A big breakfast that costs me $10 with such service, I don’t feel a single bit of pain.

Hungry? You know who to call… 6777 3777

The perils of a troubled mind

Written by ED on August 7, 2007 – 4:13 am -

Been enduring the gastric pain for a short while, and finally decided to cook since the pill showed little effects. Maybe it’s a better idea to have Indomie Mee Goreng. Quickly I got my pot of water and set my pot above the water. Got my last packet of noodles and carried on with the you-know-what… wait for water to boil, then place in the noodles, open the seasonings and poured it all in.

DANGZ!!!!!!!Now tell me what is wrong!?!?!?

Ok fine, something was on my mind and no wonder my dog was sitting there staring at my absurb behaviour. Whatever… last packet is gone. So be it. Drink water til I feel sleepy then.
