I love big mangoes!

Written by ED on May 11, 2008 – 10:07 pm -

This is not R(A) and nothing to do with those alternative “mangoes” you are thinking of. I’m talking about REAL mangoes. Talking about my relatives, I realized we have quite a few fruit farms. There’s my youngest auntie’s durian farm in Malacca, there’s also a diversified fruit farm in Segamat. In Pahang, there used to an oil palm plantation scattered with plots of land for fruits too.

Free fruits for me, that is!

“Diet” drinks & their cancerous compounds

Written by ED on May 6, 2008 – 8:31 pm -

What if I tell you that the Diet Coke you are drinking may contribute to higher chances of leukemia, lymphoma or breast cancer? How much more healthy are you, if you are a regular drinker of such sugar-free drinks?

Several friends have shared their lifestyle choices with me, and diet drinks are one of them. In fact, I didn’t know there is a group of (low profile) diet-drinks community in Singapore until I was told. With it, they advocate healthy life choices in terms of food and activities. Of course, healthy food is what our Government is also hoping for Singaporeans to adopt. What if the crowd is wrong?

Pork Ribs Soup… but why “teh” and not “teng”?

Written by ED on December 31, 2007 – 3:40 pm -

Mum decided to reward me today with Bah Kut Teh today for helping to clean up the entire house the past few days. No, I’m not talking about buying it at the hawker centre but Mum cooked it today. For the benefit of my overseas readers, Bah Kut Teh is actually pork ribs soup. It originated in Malaysia if I have not remembered wrongly.

As I was enjoying my Bah Kut Teh, it just struck me. Why is it Bah Kut Teh and not Bah Kut Teng?

Saturday (Home Alone) Lunch

Written by ED on December 1, 2007 – 1:53 pm -

Haha, I told you I love it when my family is not at home and I can have the whole kitchen to myself right? It’s another beautiful Saturday again, and the silence in the whole house is so sweet. Best of all, I cook my own lunch again. Nothing beats cooking my own lunch. What did I have? Ahemmm…

Reflections over home cooked food

Written by ED on August 10, 2007 – 9:30 pm -

My family is overseas for tour… and I love it. First, it’s the peace that I get. I have the entire place to myself and I play my music pretty loud without people banging my room’s door. Not that it is that loud, they just have something against the kind of music I listen to. Play anything to their liking, nothing’s too loud even when I am sleeping. Now you know the other reason why I am in desperate need to move out… when this affects my doing of music. It became a neccessity instead of want.

The other thing I like, is the complete freedom to cook my own food. Most housewives like my mum cooks the meals, so half the time even if they have a bad hair day and something weird ends up on the dining table - nothing much we can complain about. When it finally comes to a situation like now, many pampered people would pray for their quick return but not me. I wish they can stay overseas longer so I can do my own cooking.I had Japanese food and two Mcdonald’s meals over yesterday, I reckon today would be a good day to detox myself with some decent home cooked dinner. Yep, I skipped lunch with three cups of coffee and a cookie. I began to crave for Chicken Cabbage Soup again so very quickly I bought all the ingredients from NTUC. For tonight, I’m having…

Chicken Cabbage Soup

Tofu - Minced Pork

Oyster Sauce Baby Kailan

As I learnt cooking several years back after renting my own apartment out there, I began to understand what it seriously meant “children (no matter how old) are forever little kids in the parents’ eyes”. As I was browsing through NTUC, there was this lady who was trying to choose some fresh vegetables when her mum interrupted her. She told her mum she knew what she wanna buy and her mum just went yakkaty yakkaty yakkaty. Amusing scene to me, because I have such parents. Mum does most of the cooking, but apparently she thinks that I can’t even survive with a woman who can’t cook a decent meal. On the contrary, my elder sister can’t even cook a pot of rice without accidents. She doesn’t know how much water to put in. Beat that! And I thought preparing rice is one of the easiest, apart from instant noodles.

Sometimes I wish I could just tell her; Mum, I’m all grown up… I have lived by myself for two freaking years which you don’t know where… I have been sailing out in South China Sea for more than three years and prepared meals for my entire ship crew with half-past-six cooking skills. The only thing they can do is fried fried fried. That’s the easiest for them, until I joined their ship and shook my head at their cooking. One of the senior man in the ship and I - being the better cooks - volunteered to prepare meals for the entire ship instead of wasting precious ingredients at their hands. Sure, it cuts into our resting time… but at least I know I am eating better food and I go to rest a happier man.

Mum, why do you think I was snooping around the kitchen as a primary school child whenever you cook? I was stealing knowledge! Hahaha!

I think my elder sister has more to worry about not being able to get married than I do. With or without a woman, it doesn’t really makes alot of difference. Not like I can’t cook for myself?

Some may ask, what’s the big deal about home cooked food? The big deal is, throw the majority of Singaporeans in a war-zone, they are probably going to die of hunger instead of getting shot by bullets. McDelivery in Afghanistan? You’d wish! So why shouldn’t some of us be proud that we can fill our own tummy without relying on others? What’s even more humorous is whenever I hear “Singaporeans love food…” I tend to finish off the sentence in my heart with “… but they can’t cook!” Of course, a small handful of friends around me know how, and sometimes we cook and bring over to each other’s place for a mini-gathering.

I enjoyed my dinner thoroughly… what did you have?

Before

After

BURPPPPzzzzzzz!!!

Catching up on a public holiday

Written by ED on August 10, 2007 – 3:27 am -

Even though I am not a keen follower of the National Day Parade, I must admit that this public holiday is darn good for catching up with friends. One funny thing is, alot of people assumed I have no social life just because I hardly write any posts about my outings. Well, let’s just say such outings are trivials which are oh-so-common. Who cares who I meet and hang out with anyway?

This afternoon, I met up with Sis Ling and was introduced to her friend Esther. Gosh, I haven’t stepped into a KTV for a really long time. Ling was pushing me to wear a red shirt… but but but… I really don’t have a red shirt. I think there was some sort of promotion going on at KBox for customers wearing red. I ended up having two mugs of beer there, thankfully not potent enough to make me walk sideways. Friends who know me, I’m always a whisky person.

We finally called it a day at KBox and had our dinner at Ichiban Sushi, Parkway Parade. See what I mean by having more friends who stay in the East? Anyway, the food was so-so. Not that we are fussy eaters, but I think three of us were so engrossed in our conversation that everything just went down our throat. Ling ordered a Yuba Maki Age, Esther ordered a Salmon Kabuto Teriyaki and for myself, Gyu Teri Don. I asked if anyone was game enough for sashimi, wow… we chose Spicy Salmon Carpaccio. It’s not really spicy as stated though… but whatever. As long as it’s sashimi, can’t ask for anything better.

So it was indeed a great meetup. We were there enjoying our food, talking about work, life, people etc… it sure beats having to scream myself silly in a club just to pass a simple message across.

I desperately need to move to the East. ROFL!

A quick snap… Esther & Ed

Something is very wrong with Ling’s flag… can you spot it? ROFLMAO!
