Will the real psychopath please stand up?

Written by ED on June 8, 2008 – 6:46 am -

It was like a Mediacorp prime-time drama when Chee Soon Juan was recently hurled with the insult of “near psychopath” by a much respected political figure, Lee Kuan Yew. Sure, it raised the eyebrows of some while others found it hilarious for such insults to be permissible in the Court of Law. Of course, it was a very glaring evidence who the laws applied to, and who are exempted. I’m not about to start a discussion on our judiciary though, since Law Minister K Shanmugam said it is the duty of citizens to “condemn attacks on the country’s judiciary.”

I began to ponder about the term “psychopath” when I watched Most Evil on Discovery Channel. What exactly makes Mr Chee near-psychopathic? Maybe Mr Chee is already psychopathic? Or perhaps, the psychopathic one isn’t Mr Chee at all?

How can Malaysia improve?

Written by ED on June 5, 2008 – 7:39 pm -

Singaporeans are still generally calm, while recent fuel price hikes fumed our Malaysian friends. It was anticipated because Malaysia had once again, chosen to point fingers at her neighbours instead of examining what has gone wrong with their governance. It is always hard for the Governments to take a step back and say, “We are sorry, we have been wrong.”

When the news first broke out, my thoughts weren’t about how much Singaporean motorists will have to pay for petrol in Malaysia. Simply, being close enough to top up petrol in Johor Bahru is a bonus, and should not be seen as a Rights of Singaporean motorist to enjoy the subsidies. How does cutting down on fuel subsidies help the Malaysian Government then?

Can Malaysia walk the talk?

Written by ED on June 5, 2008 – 7:30 am -

If there’s anybody who can make a mockery out of Malaysia it can only be her ministers, following reports that Malaysia will continue to push for her claim on Pedra Branca. It just showed precisely why Singapore has always been wary of our “good neighbour”. Some of us saw it coming, did you?

If bilateral ties ain’t messy enough, this will certainly turn some stomachs even across the causeway from Singapore. It really leads one to wonder if Malaysian officials are respectable enough to stand by their words, especially when both countries had pledged to accept ICJ’s judgement as final.

Junta criticizes lack of humanitarian spirit

Written by ED on May 31, 2008 – 3:08 pm -

I think the World has been right in being pessimistic, and indeed Myanmar has turned a full 180o in criticism of aid countries barely after a week. Perhaps, it was a show specially performed for United Nations Secretary General - Mr Ban Ki-moon. They ran a similar show afterall, when “organized relief camps” were being displayed to diplomats.

We have heard it all too many times, that Myanmar is fully capable of managing the disaster. I finally understood what the Junta leaders actually meant when New Light of Myanmar (owned by Myanmar Government) said, “Myanmar people can easily get fish for dishes by just fishing in the fields and ditches. In the early monsoon, large edible frogs are abundant.”

Singaporeans are foreign smugglers, so says Yakcop

Written by ED on May 29, 2008 – 9:29 pm -

I have never once swear in my blog, but this time to Malaysia’s Second Finance Minister Nor Mohamed Yakcop - DAMN YOU! You will probably be ashamed to talk about the human smugglers in your own country.

I have never had any adverse opinions of Malaysia’s adjustment of petrol prices because like Singapore, the subsidies should always be directed at the citizens before all else. That is only rightful. In that sense, it is perfectly in Malaysia’s jurisdiction to re-assess their funds management.
